The Sandbox Schools Project is an ambitious multi-year initiative that involves setting up a ‘laboratory’ for trialling approaches to develop competencies for a changing world in South African public schools. The vision of the Sandbox is to test these teaching and learning practices within the context of a ‘typical’ public school, along with existing resource constraints and challenges, in order to gather substantial evidence on which practices and models are best suited to the South African schooling system.
The intention of Sandbox Schools initiative is to boldly explore and drive the transformation agenda in education, and it is specifically designed to assist the education sector to respond to the demands of this changing world. As the pilot progresses, the evidence and learnings collected will be made available to the Department of Basic Education, sector stakeholders and civil society.
For a more detailed rationale and description of the Sandbox initiative, see Part 1 and Part 2 of an introductory series.
